Bair Hugger™ Blanket Attributed to Onset of Joint Infection
The Bair Hugger™ Forced Air Warming Blanket is designed to keep a patient warm during surgery by forcing warm air through pockets in the blanket. The device that pumps the warm air into the blanket expels excess air into the operating room, under the operating table, and then sucks this air back up and disperses it into the blanket, then repeats the procedure in a cycle.
Unfortunately, studies have found that this recirculated air is full of contaminants, and that those contaminants are swirling around the open surgery wound. Contaminants can contain bacteria and, during knee replacement or hip replacement surgery, can cause a deep joint infection such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This type of infection is very serious and may result in revisionary surgery or amputation.

If you have suffered a joint infection after knee replacement or hip replacement surgery, you may be eligible for compensation. One man has already had his leg amputated as a result of a deep joint infection he contracted during knee surgery where a Bair Hugger™ warming blanket was used. The manufacturer of the Bair Hugger Forced Air Warming Blanket, 3M™, has done nothing to modify the way the device is used, and is now the subject of multiple lawsuits.
