Nursing Home Injuries Attorney

Falls & Fractures

For an elderly person, nursing home injuries such as a fall can be extremely serious and can lead to overall reduced quality of life. Some may even experience fear and anxiety that they will fall again, which can, in turn, contribute to depression and isolation. Considering the physical and mental impact that nursing home injuries can have, it’s important to understand how they occur and what can be done to help a victim regain their independence. Talking to an experienced personal injury attorney may help.

Common causes of nursing home injuries resulting in broken bones include:

  • Muscle weakness, gait problems, and issues with balance or eyesight
  • Environmental hazards, such as objects or equipment in walkways
  • Unsafe property grounds, including poor lighting, wet floors, or missing railings
  • Difficulty transferring from wheelchairs to beds, and back again
  • Medications that affect the central nervous system

Physical Abuse

It is an unfortunate truth that some people take advantage of an elderly person’s physical or mental incapacity to commit abuse. Elder abuse of any kind is simply inexcusable. It is particularly hurtful when the abuse comes from the very people entrusted with an elderly person’s care.

In nursing home injuries cases involving physical abuse, the facility may share responsibility as well as the abuser. A nursing home or elder care center that is negligent in performing background checks, investigating claims of abuse, or dismissing employees who have caused harm is also responsible. When we take on a case involving elder physical abuse, we hold all at-fault parties accountable. We leave no stone unturned to ensure justice is served.

Common examples of elder physical abuse:

  • Burning with a cigarette or other object
  • Pushing or shoving
  • Using restraints unnecessarily or inappropriately
  • Making threats of violence
  • Striking, hitting, kicking, or slapping
  • Any other form of physical violence

Bed Sores

Bed sores, also referred to as pressure sores or pressure ulcers, are painful injuries caused by damage to the skin and soft tissue that results from prolonged pressure on the affected area. Elderly patients at nursing homes and elder care centers who have mobility issues or are bedridden are at risk of developing bed sores if they are not properly cared for. With these injuries, prevention is the key. Treatment and healing can take time, so it is better to prevent them in the first place by frequently repositioning the patient.

The greatest risk of developing bed sores include patients who are:

  • Sedated
  • Paralyzed
  • Injured and confined to a wheelchair
  • Injured and bedridden
  • Comatose
  • In overall poor health and with limited mobility
  • Undergoing recovery after surgery

Wrongful Death

When we put our elderly loved ones in nursing homes, we are trusting their very lives to the caregivers and staff members at these facilities. We do so with the assumption that they will receive proper care, but this does not always occur. The results can be tragic.

If you lost a loved one who was at a nursing home, elder care center, rehabilitation center, or assisted living facility, we want to hear your story. We can investigate the circumstances surrounding your loved one’s death to determine what occurred and whether any type of wrongdoing was involved. We can seek justice in your loved one’s name.

Common causes of wrongful death at nursing homes:

  • Medication errors
  • Negligent supervision
  • Serious slip and fall accidents
  • Physical abuse
  • Severe dehydration or malnutrition
  • Delays or failures to seek medical care for injuries or illnesses
  • Improper wound care, leading to infection or sepsis
  • Suicide resulting from psychological or sexual abuse
