What Is Risperdal? Why Is It Prescribed In Children?

The active ingredient in Risperdal is risperdone, a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1993 for the treatment of schizophrenia. Because the drug is classified as an antipsychotic, the parent company, Johnson & Johnson, pushed to get the drug approved for other uses. Johnson & Johnson, under the name of Janssen Pharmaceuticals, pushed for the drug to be used  for the treatment of dementia in the elderly.

Not stopping there, in 2006 J&J also sought approval to administer the drug to children.

FDA Did Not Approve The Off Label Use of Risperdal

Often prescribed to children for Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, aggression, autism and even irritability.

These uses were never approved by the FDA, which is often called “off label” use. Risperdal use has been associated with

breast growth in adolescent boys, also known as “gynecomastia.”  Despite this condition, the company still aggressively promoted the use of their drug with children.

Risperdal Lawsuits Follow Federal Settlement

In November of 2014, a settlement was reached with Johnson & Johnson and the federal government whereby J&J was ordered to pay $2.2 billion. Of that, $1.72 billion is set aside for anticipated civil fines. Some civil actions have already been filed, and led to heavy fines at the state level. The federal settlement supersedes these type of civil cases. As a result of this settlement, adolescent boys and young men who have suffered side effects of Risperdal (such as gynecomastia) should be able to recover compensation.
