Cancer Claims Being Placed Against Zantac Manufacturer

The recall of Zantac shows that those who take medications should be on the alert for potential problems, especially recalls. Zantac is used to treat heartburn, stomach and throat problems as well as ulcers. This is because drugs taken off the market have been shown to have dangerous side effects or be contaminated. Zantac (ranitidine) was withdrawn from the market in 2020 due to the presence of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which is known to cause cancer.

Why Was Zantac Recalled?

The drug was withdrawn from the market after it was discovered that NDMA levels in the stored drug increase over time, even under ideal storage conditions. Under higher temperature storage, the NDMA level increases significantly. Sanofi’s Zantac 360 does not contain NDMA and is still on the market.

What Types of Cancer Have Been Associated With NDMA?

The World Health Organization (WHO), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have all classified NDMA as a substance that causes cancer. The following cancers have been associated with ingestion of this substance:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Gastric/stomach cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer

Company Knew Early On That Zantac Could Cause Cancer

Researchers knew since 2016 that Zantac could cause cancer, even when taking a normal dose of the medicine. According to WebMD,  the levels of NDMA increased by 400 percent after taking a single dose of the medicine. The FDA said that 95 nanograms was an acceptable level after taking a drug. Researchers, on the other hand, found levels as high as 47,600 nanograms.

How Do I Know if Zantac Caused My Cancer?

If someone suspects that taking Zantac may have caused their cancer, asking themselves the following questions may help:

  • Were you regularly taking Zantac?
  • Had you taken it on a regular basis within 10 years before your cancer diagnosis?
  • How long were you taking Zantac?
  • Do you have one of the types of cancer listed above?

If you were a regular user of Zantac and developed one of the aforementioned cancers, you might be able to place a claim for compensation against the manufacturer.
