A development in the Wen Hair Products lawsuit is a major step forward for plaintiffs involved in the class action litigation. More than 200 people have joined the Wen class action lawsuit alleging the product caused scalp irritation and hair loss. A Southern California federal judge has approved a $26.25 million settlement proposal. If the preliminary ruling by the Southern California federal judge is upheld upon review by a U.S.  District Court Judge, millions of people injured by Wen Hair Products could receive up to $20,000 to settle their claims.

In a statement to CBS Los Angeles, an attorney for the plaintiffs, Amy Davis, explained why Wen Hair Products appear to result in hair loss. According to Ms. Davis, “From what we understand about the product and how it causes hair loss is it contains virtually no cleanser. It’s like using lotion to wash your hair. So instead of removing the product when you rinse it off, it just becomes impacted in your hair follicle.” When the hair follicle is clogged with the product, hair cannot grow. Eventually, the person experiences hair loss.

How Did The Class Action Lawsuit Begin?

Last year, a class action lawsuit was filed by hundreds of women against Chaz Dean, celebrity hairstylist, and Guthy-Renker, the company that markets Wen Hair Products. The lawsuit alleged customers were experiencing horrific side effects after using Wen Hair Products. The most alarming side effect of using the haircare products appears to be substantial and permanent hair loss.

Hundreds of customers filed complaints with the FDA and wrote scathing reviews of the product on the company’s website and other consumer websites. One plaintiff claims she suffered “substantial and abnormal” hair loss within two weeks of using Wen products. Another customer wrote that after using the product the person “noticed a bald spot the size of a half dollar at the crown of my head. I nearly passed out.”

The company claims on its website that its haircare products “give your hair more shine, body, and bounce.” Regarding the initial approval of the $26.25 million settlement proposal, Wen issued the following statement, “Wen by Chaz Dean is safe and we continue to provide our hundreds of thousands of customers with the Wen by Chaz Dean products that they know and love. Since the process of litigation is time-consuming and costly, we made a business decision to pursue a settlement and put this behind us so that we can focus on delivering quality products.”

If you have suffered hair loss, scalp irritation, or other adverse reaction after using Wen Hair Products, you should report the matter to the FDA through its MedWatch program and contact an attorney immediately. You may be entitled to receive compensation for your hair loss and other damages associated with using Wen Hair Products.
