Multi-Vehicle Crash Claims the Life of a Trucker

A multiple-vehicle trucking wreck on Interstate 10 near the Louisiana-Mississippi state line ended with one fatality and an 18-wheeler submerged in water near the highway. All lanes on I-10 were reopened early on Wednesday morning.

According to authorities, an as-yet unidentified driver of a black pickup truck caused a chain-reaction crash which involved two tractor-trailor trucks. One of the 18-wheelers veered off the roadway and crashed into the Pearl River near the interstate. The driver of that big rig was killed in the accident. “We have one confirmed fatality — the driver of the 18-wheeler that did get submerged in the water. His body has been recovered by the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office, their dive team, and taken possession of by the coroner’s office here,” said Sgt. Nick Manale, with Louisiana State Police.

Police Still Searching – Investigation Continues

No other injuries were reported in the crash, although state police are still searching for the driver of the black pickup truck in order to question him or her about the accident. As they search for that person, however, police warned other drivers to use extra caution in dangerous conditions.

“We had fog in the area; of course it’s very dark in this section of the roadway by the state line. Of course drivers just have to keep all of that in mind. . . . Be cautious, give yourself extra time to get to your destination, drive safe, be patient and make good decisions,” said Manale. All lanes of Interstate 10 were reopened around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Crews were scheduled to return to the scene later in the day to begin the removal of the 18-wheeler from the river.
