Type 2 Diabetics At Risk of Heart Failure While Taking Onglyza or Kombiglyze XR

Type 2 Diabetes medications typically carry dangerous side effects. So much so, that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) formally requested that drug manufacturers any Type 2 diabetes medications comply with the FDA's safety study. Their study suggests that any new drug for treating Type 2 diabetes should not increase the patient's risk of heart conditions by more than 30 percent. While Onglyza met that requirement, there have been enough reports to the FDA recently to indicate that a warning label may be in order.

In response to these reports, the Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee was formed by the FDA to determine if there was a link between Onglyza and heart failure in Type 2 diabetics. The panel voted 14-1 to recommend an update to the labeling of Onglyza warning patients of an increased risk of heart failure. One panelist voted to remove the drug from the market completely. Data suggested that patients taking Onglyza faced a 27% increased risk of being hospitalized for heart failure.
