YAZ® (Drospirenone)
YAZ® and Yasmin® are oral contraceptives that are also often prescribed to treat symptoms of PMDD (premenstrual dysmorphic disorder) such as anxiety, depression, or weight gain. Ocella® and Gianvi® are generic versions of the same drugs. These drugs have been found to cause severe side effects
- Blood Clots
- Deep Vein Thrombosis, (DVT)
- Ischemic Strokes
- Pulmonary Embolism.
In October 2011, The British Medical Journal published a study that linked the active ingredient in YAZ® and Yasmin® (drospirenone) to increased incidents of potentially life-threatening blood clots. The FDA has also released a study that found YAZ® and Yasmin® increased the risk of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism by as much as 74%. And in May 2012, the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices reported that YAZ® and Yasmin® were responsible for the second-highest number of injury and side effect reports to the FDA in 2011.
Since 2009, more than 12,000 lawsuits have been filed nationwide against the manufacturers of YAZ® Yasmin® Ocella® and Gianvi®. These suits allege that the manufacturers did not adequately research these drugs and negligently and fraudulently failed to inform both physicians and the public of the true risks associated with them. In 2010, these lawsuits were consolidated into a multi-district litigation (MDL) in the Southern District of Illinois, where they are currently pending.
Earlier this year, Bayer began settling YAZ® and Yasmin® lawsuits. Although compensation varies from case to case, depending on age, injury, and other factors, the average recovery in the first round of settlements paid by Bayer was more than $200,000. Importantly, however, the special master overseeing settlements for the MDL court in Illinois predicts that the settlement process will move quickly and may be completed soon, perhaps within a year. As a result, anyone who may have experienced serious side effects from YAZ® Yasmin® Ocella® or Gianvi® should consult an attorney to evaluate their legal options as soon as possible.
